Route description and its technical characteristics
The Lombardic part of the route encompasses all the western outer-city of Milan and it follows a rectilineal and flat route which crosses the cities of Pero, Rho, Legnano, Busto Arsizio and Gallarate.
After Sesto Calende, you enter the Piedmontese area which coasts the south shore of Lake Maggiore. Crossing the intersection  with the SS 32 you go up to the right shore of the Lake passing through the greater centres: Arona, Stresa and Baveno.
Traffic in this part of the route flows quite smoothly with the exception of the inhabited areas where the route inevitably straightens. After Gravellona, the route follows the course of the River Toce thus remaining fast and smooth flowing to Domodossol. From here it goes up the Divedro Valley to the road that intersects the Sempione (SS 33 link road).From this point the road becomes a normal mountain road because of an unevenness of 400 meters that lasts for about 11 kilometres.

Data and characteristics of the traffic
 Traffic changes remarkably along the route and can become very heavy, especially in the Lombardic area. The part of the route which coasts the Lake Maggiore experiences a lot of traffic too, but most of all during the  Summer and Spring months, because of the  tourist resorts. Towards the end of the route which goes from Gravellona to Domodossola and to Sempione, traffic is mostly local. Several projects have been carried out in order to create reduced speed zones through the use of roundabouts and speed traps which are effective in doing so.
